LIDS provides Copier/Printer/Scanner machines for professional use in Buildings 32 and 45. Printing and copying incurs a small fee; scanning is free. Access codes are available from support staff.
Learn moreThe LIDS Copier/Printer/Scanner machines are located in the lobbies of the 6th and 7th floors in building 32, and in 501P and 601P in building 45. Please check with your host's support staff member for the access account code. This machines may be used by all LIDS members for professional work. There is a charge of $0.0296 for each black/white page and $0.072 for each color page that is printed or copied (that is per-side, so printing or copying one double-sided page would cost $.06 or $0.15). Note: you must be on either the wired network, or the MIT SECURE wireless network to connect to these printers.
You can configure printing for Window, Mac or Linux.
The photocopy machine is for research-related work by members of LIDS. (Copying for courses should be done through the appropriate Education Office for your department.) If you have any difficulties with the copy machine, please ask a staff member for assistance rather than trying to fix it yourself. For personal copying, please use CopyTech in 11-004 or in the Student Center.
The copier can scan documents to a usb device or an email address.
Addressing Mail
All mail (including packages being shipped to you) should be addressed as follows:
YOUR NAME
Massachusetts Institute of Technology
77 Massachusetts Avenue
32-DXXX ← where 32 is our building number and DXXX is your office number
Cambridge, MA 02139
Please note that if mail is addressed to you in a different format than above, it may not get to you!
Receiving regular mail (anything that’s not a package)
If you are in a 5th floor LIDS office
Mail for the 5th floor can be found in two dividers in the hallway area near the fax machine and microwave. If you are not able to locate your mail, please contact your Research Supervisor’s LIDS Administrative Assistant.
If you are in a 6th or 7th floor LIDS office
This mail is delivered to the mail room in the basement of Stata and will be distributed by a LIDS Administrative Assistant If you are expecting important mail and need to check the mailroom yourself, please see your Research Supervisor’s LIDS Administrative Assistant for information on how to collect your mail from here.
Receiving packages
Packages are routed to different places on campus depending on who the mail carrier is.
United States Postal Service (USPS)
These packages first go to Mail Services (Building WW15) and then get routed to the mail room in the basement of Stata - please see your Research Supervisor’s LIDS Admin to find out how to access the mail room to pick up your package.
FEDEX, UPS, and other express carriers
These packages first go to the loading dock in the basement of Stata. They are delivered directly to individual offices the day they are received in the loading dock or the day after.
If you are trying to track or pick up a package you need urgently, you can go down to the Stata Center loading dock (for FEDEX and UPS packages) or contact Mail Services (for USPS packages). You will need to know who the carrier is and to have a tracking number if at all possible.
Shipping mail and packages
There is a U.S. Post Office at MIT’s Student Center, and another on Main Street. There is a FEDEX location on Main Street in the Tech Square area. There is also a FEDEX drop of box in the basement of Stata.
Closer to LIDS, there is a multi-box mail drop located on the 1st floor of Stata across from the Dreyfoos Tower elevators:
Interdepartmental Mail & U.S. Stamped Mail box
Domestic mail with postage already affixed can be dropped in this box. Interdepartmental mail can be dropped in this box, as well. No postage is required for interdepartmental mail.
Interdepartmental mail can be addressed with the person or office’s name and their MIT building and room number (e.g. Jennifer Donovan, 32-D610).
Domestic Mail To Be Processed and International Mail To Be Processed boxes
When postage is being paid for by an MIT account, the piece of mail gets marked up and processed in a specific way by the institute. These boxes are mainly for use by MIT staff.
Note: you must be on either the LIDS wired network or the MIT SECURE wireless network to connect to these printers.
For the 6th floor copier, download and install the printer driver for Windows and go to the instructions below.
For the 7th floor copier, download and install this driver, and then go to the instructions for that printer.
After accepting Xerox's licensing agreement, a window will open up and start searching for printers on your network. Click on the second icon in the top of the installation's window and enter copier.lids.mit.edu for the 6th floor copier (as shown below), then click 'Search':
After selecting the copier, click 'Next' and you will see another window that will present you with some installation options. Enter the information as shown below and click 'Install'.
You should see another window pop up after the driver is finished being installed. Uncheck the box that says 'Set Printer As Default' (unless you want to use this as your default printer), and the box that says 'Print a Test Page' (as we haven't finished configuring the printer). Click 'Finish', and if you see another window about registering the printer, close it.
A passcode is required to print to the copier. To configure your driver to supply the proper code, open the Control Panel (In Windows 8 or 10, look for a key on your keyboard that looks like a Windows logo and hold that and the 'X' key down simultaneously and then select 'Control Panel' from the menu that pops up. In Windows 7, click on the Start button and select 'Control Panel'.)
Then click on 'Devices and Printers', and look for the printer we just installed (labeled 'LIDS Copier' if you followed the instructions above). Right-click on that printer and select 'Printer Properties'.
In the window that pops up, select the 'Configuration' tab, then look for the 'Accounting' section and next to 'Accounting Codes', click on 'Setup'.
Enter the code you received from your Administrative Assistant into the User ID field, and make sure 'Default Group Account' is selected.
Click on 'OK', and then change 'Print-Time Prompt' to 'Do Not Prompt' (the settings should be the same as what is shown in the image below).
Click OK, and try printing something.
After starting the installer, click on the button that says 'Don't see your printer?'. Then enter 'copier-7.lids.mit.edu' and click on Connect.
Then accept the defaults and change the Printer Name if you want:
Click 'Done' on the last page. The installer might try to download another app from the Microsoft Store, but feel free to click 'Done' anyway.

Then click 'OK', and try to print something.
Please email Brian if you run into any problems or have any questions.

This section should be the same for both LIDS printers in building 32 and 45. First, Download and and run the driver installation package. (If you already configured a printer in building 32, you can skip this step.) You can click 'Continue' at each stop of the process and accept any defaults that are presented to you.
After the installer runs a bit it will ask which printer you want to install. Just click Continue. You might see a warning box pop up letting you know a print queue was not created. Click Continue again and keep clicking Continue until the installer quits.
Now go to your System Settings and select Printers & Scanners. Then click on Add Printer. Then click IP and enter the hostname of the printer you want to use in the Address box. It could be one of these:
After a few seconds, the rest of the required information should be automatically filled in.
These printers require a passcode to print (you can get the code from your Administrative Assistant). The settings should be the same for all printers, so if you've installed the driver for one printer, just go through the steps below for another one.
If using a non-Apple app to print (Chrome or Acrobat, for example), look for a link that says 'Print using the system dialog...' when trying to print. In the window that pops up, scroll down and expand Printer Options. Then select Xerox Features. From there you can select things like single/double-sided printing, or automatic stapling.
Now you can send the job to the printer. Click 'Print', and in the window that pops up enter your copier code in the field labeled 'User ID'.
If you have questions, or run in to any problems, email lids-help@mit.edu.
Note: you must be on either the LIDS wired network or the MIT SECURE wireless network to connect to these printers.
The simplest way to print from a Linux distribution is to use the copier's web interface:
Enter your copy code as both the username and password to login. After that, you should see something similar to the following:
Once there, upload the file you'd like to print, choose from the options provided, and enter the code you received from your Administrative Assistant in the 'User ID' field. If you are asked to login, try using your copier code as both the username and password.
To avoid paper size issues, under the 'Paper Selection' section, select 'Letter' in the 'Size' dropdown menu.
