LIDS research ranges from development of basic theory, methodologies, algorithms, and computational infrastructures to adaptations of this work for challenging applications in a broad array of fields.

OUR RESEARCH
LIDS research
LIDS research builds on decades of foundational research in the laboratory. Our goal is to enhance the human experience by infusing computing with the physical and social fabric of our lives to augment humans. Our focus areas the key pillars of this vision.
Research in LIDS addresses and is driven by broad challenges, emerging applications, critical needs, and intellectual opportunities for technological advances in numerous impact areas.
Researchers at LIDS are leaders of their research fields, moving and shaping these fields to our vision and to the needs of the impact areas. The wide range of fields range from statistics and optimization to robotics and behavioral science.
Most of the research activities in LIDS cut across disciplinary boundaries and involve collaboration with colleagues across MIT. LIDS collaborations also extend beyond MIT. In addition to partnering with colleagues at other top academic institutions around the world, we continue to develop relationships with industrial organizations and national laboratories. We continue to establish several research initiatives that bring together our faculty and PIs along with others across MIT and beyond. Our initiatives support building new communities.

Focus areas


Machine learning
LIDS focuses on scalable algorithms in inference and machine learning, extracting insights from complex data for estimation, optimization, and control.
LIDS is a center of gravity at MIT for machine learning research. LIDS research has made pioneering contributions to machine leaning theory, algorithms and applications, including key advances in relevant disciplines, such as statistics, optimization and game theory.
