About LIDS

The Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS) is an interdepartmental research center at MIT. Our goal is to build new computing methodologies that are seamlessly integrated into social or physical dynamics. The Laboratory's focus areas include four core aspects of computing: Foundations of machine learning, autonomy & agency, computing & society, and computing & sustainability, with applications in numerous domains.

ABOUT US

Throughout its history, LIDS has been at the forefront of major developments in a wide range of computing fields.

LIDS is the longest continuously-operating research laboratory at MIT. Founded in 1940 as the Servomechanisms Laboratory, LIDS has developed computing technology and methodologies to address pressing real-world needs. Among these are the first all-digital computer called the Whirlwind, first computer-aided manufacturing systems, and first data search and retrieval systems. Throughout the years, LIDS researchers have developed the principles of algorithms for inference and decision-making that are widely utilized today.

LIDS research is inspired by and found applications in numerous domains, such as aerospace & defense, automotive, business processes, finance, energy, and human health, information technology, telecommunications and more. LIDS builds on its collaborative atmosphere to seek breakthroughs that transcend traditional boundaries. LIDS is an exciting, energizing, and enriching place to be.

Our members share a common problem-solving approach, recognizing the essential role of mathematics, computing and application domains in their research. Their work is strengthened by affiliations with colleagues across MIT and global partnerships with leading industrial and government organizations.

LIDS continues to develop new computing methodologies and apply them in challenging domains since its inception more than 80 years ago.
Help advance groundbreaking research, empower students, and sustain LIDS’ vibrant intellectual community.
